Historical spring in Pulwama Sirnoo witnesses revival
Pulwama: The water level at the historic and significant spring Sirnoo in Pulwama district has got restored after remaining dry for around two months.
The spring has faced an unprecedented crisis as its water level had plummeted to record lows two months back due to prolonged dryness but it has got restored due to recent rains, locals said Wednesday.
The spring in Sirnoo in south Kashmir’s Pulwama town holds immense spiritual significance for the local community as there is Mosque on one side and a Temple on the other side.
The spring has been a source of freshwater and a site of religious gatherings for generations together and both communities were feeling dejected to drying up of the water body.
Locals said that the spring has religious importance and has remained a source of fresh water for generations together.
They said that the water level of the spring had been receding in the past as well but it had never dried up.
Ali Mohammad Dar, a local resident said that spring dried up this year for the first time but thanks to Almighty that water level has been restored.
He said that water of the spring is being used by both muslims and pandits for ablutions before entering the Mosque or Temple.
He said that people used to use water from this spring for drinking purposes, agriculture and other needs but this year it dried up and the main reason was believed to be the reduced precipitation across Kashmir valley since the past many months.
Farooq Ahmad Reshie, another local resident said that the spring was home to hundreds of fishes and due to drying up of the spring, most of them died and they are expecting that the number of fishes will increase again as the water level has been restored.
He said that spring was cleaned by Municipal Authority Pulwama along with the locals and the government has assured that spring’s glory will be fully restored and steps will be taken so that it won’t face such issues in future.
“Springs are one of the first victims of climate change. The drying up of such springs is a stark warning for the region’s water security,” environmental experts said.
Locals requested the government to take immediate steps for restoration and preservation of the spring
