Anantnag: The residents of Muniward area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district have united to clean water body ‘Sandran’- a tributary of river Jhelum passing through their village.
The residents of the Muniward area said that the volunteer group Khidmat-e-Khalaq Foundation and supported by other locals kick-started a cleanliness drive of Sandran, a major tributary of the Jhelum originating from Verinag.
They said that the group has been conducting cleanliness drive every week on Sundays so as to restore this famous water body to its past glory.
The youth of the area committed to rejuvenate the stream initiated a cleanliness drive, removing significant waste such as plastic bottles, polythene bags and other non-biodegradable materials, the locals said.
Water is life and everyone must make efforts to restore the water bodies in their areas, said Javed Ahmad a local resident.
He said that if everywhere banks of the water bodies can be restored, then people can use water of these water bodies even for domestic purposes.
“As climate change intensifies, the need to conserve and protect our water resources has never been more urgent,” Sajad Ahmad, another local added.
“Water scarcity, declining quality, and extreme weather patterns are direct consequences of global climate shifts, affecting millions worldwide. To mitigate these challenges, sustainable water management practices must be prioritized,” he said.
Locals while praising the efforts of the trust and youth said that majority of the stream in their village has been cleaned while the remaining portion too will be cleared.
They also requested the government to extend support to such initiatives so that all water bodies can be saved.
