Shopian: Dozens of women in Thairan Kellar area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district have been supporting their families by doing handicrafts work.
A group of women from the area said that they have been doing this work for the past one year and they want to support their families but the concerned government agencies and departments have not be so forthcoming to support us.
Fareeda Akhter, a local woman said that this is a far flung area and women need to support their families due to financial issues.
She said that for the last several years they have demanded a handicrafts centre in the area but that isn’t being established here.
Nilofar Jan, another local said that people in the area are financially weak and literacy rate is also low due to poverty, but the government has failed to support them by providing a centre here in the village.
She said that if the government will provide them a centre they can earn their livelihood in a better way as the private dealers whom they work for are exploting them to the hilt.
The women folk said that they have highlighted this issue several times and have taken up their demand with the concerned authorities but to no avail.
They said that authorities have promised them several times that centres will be established in their village but so far these promises were not fulfilled.
They have requested MLA Shopian and Deputy commissioner Shopian to intervene in this regard at an earliest.
