Locals demand intervention of higher ups
Pulwama: A vital canal passing through Kakpora town of Pulwama district has been turned into a dumping site as all the dirt and garbage is being pumped into the canal, locals alleged Tuesday.
Ali Mohammad, a resident of Kakapora said that the Lathi Canal which was once a source of fresh water and was even used for drinking purposes has been turned into a filthy drain.
He said that all dirt, along with bathroom waste and polythenes go into this canal and later same enters into river Jhelum that is source of many water supply schemes in Kakapora.
He said that irrigation department is acting as a mute spectator as they have failed to take any action in this regard.
Rafiq Ahmad Dar, another local resident said that all the dirt and filth generated in the town goes into this canal that has made the water body very filthy.
He said that public is responsible for this but the government should have intervened to save this water body.
Meanwhile, the locals said that they have brought the issues into the notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail.
They demanded that the water canal must be cleaned at an earliest and action must be taken against the encroachers and those who are defiling it.
They said that the government had earlier taken up the proposal to clean this water canal but the process wasn’t later taken up due to unknown reasons.
They have sought the attention of Deputy Commissioner Pulwama, irrigation department and Block Development Officer (BDO) in this regard.
