Naina Pulwama faces acute shortage of drinking water, allege locals

Pulwama: The residents of Naina village in Litter Tehsil of Pulwama district are facing acute shortage of drinking water as according to them the authorities have failed to provide water supply to the area.
According to locals a water supply scheme was completed recently after around ten years of toil and wait, however, the area is yet to get potable water.
They said that Vishow rivulet was proposed to be water source for the scheme but later they switched to Ranbiara rivulet due to unknown reasons.
Despite spending crores of rupees, which was meant to provide water to around one thousand households, the scheme is providing water to hardly hundred households, alleged the locals.
They said that the scheme for which they were waiting from last more than 14 years has failed to mitigate their problems.
Villagers questioned the utilisation of funds on the scheme by the department and demanded that a commission should be set up to know as to why the scheme has failed to provide water to the area.
They said that pipeline for around 400 more households were laid in March last year above the ground and once supply was started, all pipes were full of leaks that inundated the entire village.
They said that for around 400 households 6 inch pipeline was to be laid but just 9 pipes of 4 inch were laid followed by 1.5 inch pipes.
“We have to walk long distance while carrying buckets and pitchers on our heads to fetch water from Ranbi Ara rivulet as we are facing severe shortage of potable drinking water,” said Sameera Jan, a local resident.
She added that the department has spent huge amount of money on the construction but has failed to provide single drop of water to the residents.
The local stream which has contaminated water is being also used by some poor people for drinking purposes, another woman alleged.
“I am 80 years old now and in my lifetime, the water problem was never resolved in our area. I am requesting the government to solve this issue now,” Mohammad Ramzan, a local resident said.
The locals requested higher ups especially Deputy commissioner Pulwama Dr Basharat Qayoom to personally intervene in this matter so that their problems will witness some ease.
