Young Awantipora woman resorts to mushroom cultivation to earn a living

Pulwama: A young woman from Awantipora area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district is setting an inspiring example of determination and self-reliance by cultivating mushrooms at her residence to achieve financial independence.
Rukhsana Rashid (30), daughter of Abdul Rashid Sheikh, a resident of Barsoo Awantipora is currently growing mushrooms at her residence with the support of local agriculture department unit.
Rukhsana said that since her childhood she had a desire to contribute to her family’s income, she started her venture with minimal resources but immense determination.
“I submitted a form online to start mushroom cultivation by an investment of Rs 12 thousand and after sometime it got approved following which the process was started,” she said.
With support from her family and her relentless efforts, she turned a small space at her home into a thriving mushroom cultivation unit.
Her dedication paid off as her mushroom farm began yielding high-quality produce, which she now supplies to local markets and in return helps her to earn a living.
After spending Rs 12000, Rukhsana said that she got Rs 6000 as subsidy and she has sold around one hundred kgs of Mushroom and in coming days she is expected get more produce from the unit.
The venture has not only made her financially independent but also inspired many other women in the area to explore similar opportunities.
Rukhsana said that with success in first trial, she is going to extend the mushroom cultivation and grow it at large scale for more returns.
She said that with proper guidance and determination, anyone can overcome challenges and achieve success.
She said that rural women should take benefit of government schemes and start their units so as to become financially independent.
