Watchi Shopian residents demand access to safe potable water

Shopian: The residents of Watchi area in south Kashmir’s Shopian district have demanded potable water in the area alleging that the area is deprived of drinking water facilities.
The residents of the Karimpora, Lonepora and its adjacent area in Watchi said that water pipes to different areas have been laid which are going through the area but their area has been kept away from the schemes that have better water quality.
Ghulam Rasool Mir, a local senior citizen said that Watchi village being central Village in the area has been neglected on developmental front and water to the most of the village is being supplied without filtration.
He said that they have been suffering due to the contaminated water and if the department will continue to fail in providing safe drinking water there are chances that water borne diseases can break out.
Javid Ahmad, another local resident said that the dozens of households in the area are without having potable water facilities.
He said that locals have to take long routes to bring potable water for consumption as the government has failed in making such arrangements.
The locals said that they had brought the issue into the notice of concerned authorities several times but authorities are unmoved.
They said that even calling higher authorities of the department has proved futile as repeated promises have proved hoax on ground.
They requested the local administration to look into the matter and take appropriate steps in this regard so that locals won’t suffer anymore.
Meanwhile, an official of the concerned department said that work on the filtration plant is already going on and very soon all the areas will get portable water.
He said that currently water is being supplied after proper treatment.
