Pulwama: The residents of Pulwama town in south Kashmir have demanded completion of a slaughter house in the area. The civil works have been left incomplete on the slaughter house that were otherwise started four years ago, the locals alleged Tuesday.
People selling meat in Pulwama town said that meat consumption continues to rise and the necessity of slaughter house becomes all the more important.
They said that slaughter house is important in efficiently processing meat with ethical and environmental considerations.
They said that work on a slaughter house was started in the town at Drussu few years back but it was left mid-way.
Owais Ahmad, a local resident said that construction of slaughter house for proper waste management is of utmost importance but due to unknown reasons it isn’t being taken seriously.
He said that they were hopeful that slaughter house will be completed soon but due to unknown reasons it has been left out.
He said half of the work has been almost done but due to no work done in last three years, the site has been turned into a dumping site.
The locals said that with growing population implementing eco-friendly technologies and waste management systems can minimise the environmental impact.
They further added that slaughter house remain a vital component of the meat production chain and there is immediate need of a viable and functional slaughter house.
They said that they have brought the issue into the notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail.
The locals said that the slaughter house must be complete at an earliest so that waste can be managed in a proper way without attracting dogs.
They said in absence of slaughter house, herds of dogs can be seen around meat shops thereby creating problems for people.
They have sought immediate intervention of DC Pulwama in this regard
Meanwhile, an official of MC Pulwama said that work on the slaughter house is expected to resume soon as pending work has been tendered out recently.
