Pulwama:  The Public Health Engineering (PHE) department is supplying contaminated water in the Talangam area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, locals alleged Tuesday.

The residents of the area said that they have been facing the issue for the last 15 years and several people have fallen ill due to the use of contaminated water.

They said that after repeated requests to the government a water supply scheme was constructed 15 years back in the area but the water supplied is highly contaminated and even animals refuse to consume it as the water is directly being supplied from a local polluted stream.

Ghulam Mohiudin Wani, a local resident said that water is highly contaminated due to which water borne disease often break out in the area.

By using this water, many people in the area have fallen ill and the local authorities have failed to act, he added.

Nilofar Banoo, a local woman said that the water they are getting for the last 15 years isn’t good for consumption and the irony is that the people do not have any other options available.

She said that special emphasis is being given towards the proper hygiene but on ground situation is different and authorities must look into it.

The locals said that they have brought the issue into the notice of concerned authorities several times but nothing is being done on ground.

They requested higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest so that locals won’t suffer any more.

Meanwhile, an official of the concerned department said that the area gets water after proper treatment and they will get filtered water very soon.
