Waste management shed turns into garbage dumping site in Pahalgam block

Locals demand attention of local authorities
Anantnag: A much hyped Sewerage Waste Management plant has been turned into a dumping site in the Veer Saran area of Pahalgam block in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district due to which people of the area have been suffering.
Locals said that the Rural Development Department constructed a sewerage shed along Pahalgam-Bijbehara road near Pahalgam for proper disposal of garbage in the area few months back.
They said that the shed has been left defunct and all the garbage from the area is being put there and it is neither being segregated not it is being removed from the area.
They said that Veer Saran is close to Pahalgam where thousands of tourists have been visiting on daily basis and still garbage is lying scattered and it is not being lifted or treated.
They said that all garbage is lying scattered near the shed attracting a huge number of dogs thereby causing inconvenience to the residents.
Showkat Ganaie, a local resident said that government has been risking the lives of people and the scattered garbage is attracting dogs in the area despite being close to Pahalgam.
“There is no segregation being done at the spot rather it has turned into a dumping site due to which the people of the whole area are suffering”, he added.
Yasir, another local resident said that the whole garbage of the area is being dumped near the shed and it is lying scattered all over.
He said that government has spent around 5 lakh rupees for construction of this shed but it is of no use as of now.
“If the government is really working on ‘Swach Bharat Mission and Swecheta hi Sewa hai’ then they need to fix these issues immediately,” he added.
The locals said that they have brought this issue into the notice of higher ups several times but to no avail.
They requested higher ups especially DC Anantnag and ACD Anantnag o look into the matter at an earliest so that locals won’t suffer any more.
