Tulran Shopian residents seek revival of water canal

Say their orchards are drying up for want of irrigation facilities 

Shopian:- The residents of Tulran area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district have demanded immediate repair of a canal that collapsed during the previous winter.

The residents of Tulran said that the overhead water canal got damaged during snowfall in January this year thereby leaving the residents high and dry.

They said that the existing water supply scheme is not enough to cater to the village and they were using water from the canal for washing clothes and other day to day purposes but they are facing problems now.

They said that they have been somehow managing domestic water issues but orchards have been drying up as there are no irrigation facilities available for them since the canal collapsed.

Mohammad Shaban, a local numberdar said that the canal got damaged seven months ago and since then they have been facing problems.

“No water is available for irrigation purposes and even household use,” he added.

He said that locals require water for spraying pesticides in their orchard now but no water is available for the purpose.

He said that amid the extreme heat, they need water for irrigation purposes but that isn’t available due to which their orchards have started drying up.

Locals said that they have met higher ups in this regard but nothing has been done.

They said for the last 25 years, they have sought the attention of higher ups seeking a permanent solution to this issue but nothing was approved in this regard.

They added that they have met DC Shopian and sought immediate repairing but nothing has been done.

They once again requested higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest and take immediate steps in this regard so that locals won’t suffer anymore.
