Pulwama: The residents of Kachkoot Awantipora area in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district have demanded proper drainage system to their paddy fields as waterlogging is damaging their paddy saplings, locals alleged Thursday.

They said that their paddy fields had good natural drainage system but last year during the widening of the road, the majority of the drain was filled thereby leaving paddy fields without any proper drainage facility.

They said that due to the blockage of the main drain, the fields remain full of water above paddy sapling thereby damaging them.

Mohammad Akram, a local resident said that people in Kachkoot and its adjoining areas rely heavily on paddy cultivation as their primary source of income.

“However, persistent waterlogging has become a recurring problem, threatening their livelihood, he added.

The villagers have repeatedly appealed to the local authorities for intervention, but their pleas have so far gone unanswered,” he said.

The locals have demanded immediate action to construct an efficient drainage system that will prevent further damage to their fields and ensure the sustainability of their agriculture.

The residents believe that a well-designed drainage system will not only help in mitigating the waterlogging issue but will also enhance the overall productivity of their lands.

They urged the government to prioritize this infrastructure development to safeguard their agricultural practices and secure their economic well-being.

They have sought immediate intervention of LG Manoj Sinha and Deputy commissioner Pulwama in this regard.
