Rotten apples, other wastes pollute Ranbiara along IGC Lassipora
Pulwama: The residents of Pulwama and Shopian in south Kashmir have been facing problems as rotten apples along with other waste are being thrown into river Ranbiara at Industrial Growth Centre in Lassipora Pulwama, locals alleged.
The residents of the Lassipora area of Pulwama and Turkwangam area of Shopian district said that rotten apples from cold storage units of industrial area Lassipora are being thrown in the river Ranbiara.
They said that unscientific disposal of the waste is posing a serious threat to public health in the area.
Ishfaq Ahmad Bhat, a resident of Lassipora Pulwama said that water of Ranbiara was used for drinking purposes but now water has been fully polluted as all waste is being thrown into this water body.
He said that such a big industrial estate must have proper disposal facilities so that it wouldn’t risk polluting the water bodies.
Rayees Ahmad Lone, another local resident said that locals are now even hesitant to use water of the rivulet Ranbiara because of an infection threat.
He said that government must intervene otherwise there is a threat of spread of communicable diseases.
The locals said that they have brought this issue into the notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail.
They requested the district administration to look into matter at an earliest and take immediate steps in this regard.
Meanwhile, an official of the industrial estate said that they have taken up the issue with the unit holders at the estate and efforts have commenced to retrieve the rotten apples from the water body for proper disposal.
He added that efforts are on to ensure responsible waste management practices so that people won’t suffer.
