Pulwama MMA fighter secures win against Afghan player

Pulwama: In a remarkable achievement, a Mixed Martial Arts fighter from Pulwama has secured victory for India against Afghanistan, reports said.

Owais Yaqoob, a resident of Murran area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district has showcased his exceptional talent by securing victory in the 70 kg category against Afghanistan in MFN-14 MMA match held at Delhi.

Owais was representing India and by winning the game, he has brought laurels to the country.

By winning at the international level, Owais has proved that Kashmir is full of talent but they need proper platform and guidance, one of his aides said.

Owais Yaqoob said that this is the biggest win of his career as he managed to beat his opponent Mohammad Azam Mokhlis from Afghanistan.

He added that the will help him reach the elevation of his rank among Asian pro lightweight fighters.

He further added that such wins encourage him to further put in hard work and prove his mettle in the upcoming events as well.

Notably, Owais signed a three year contract with MFN in January, 2023 and made a professional debut on 31 March, 2023.

Owais says since 2015 he has taught the different forms of martial arts to over 200 youth and among them many have represented J&K at the national level and even won gold medals.

He said that in order to stay away from drugs and anti-social activities, there is a need to get youth involved in sports and martial arts.

Owais said that he was very passionate about martial arts since his childhood and from 2013 he started taking part in competitions.

Owais is the first professional MMA player from Kashmir who secured a place at Matrix Fight Night (MFN).
