Water bodies turned into dumping sites in Machama Tral, locals allege

Pulwama: All water bodies in Machama area of Tral in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district have been turned into the dumping sites and authorities are unmoved, the locals alleged Tuesday.

Locals from the area said that few small water canals are running through the village but due to the negligence of locals and officials, they have been turned into dumping sites.

They said non priority works are being taken up in the village while the priority works are being neglected.

Gulzar Ahmad, a local resident said that heaps of polythene, plastic, paper and other medical wastes are being dumped in these water bodies but no steps are being taken to control the menace.

He said that the these water bodies are shrinking with each passing day and there is immediate need of restoration of these water bodies.

The locals claimed that they had informed the concerned authorities several times but they failed to do anything substantial in this regard.

The heaps of garbage and stagnant water pose a threat of communicable disease, said BashirAhmad, another local.

He added that some locals have been dumping their waste products in these water bodies that needs to be stopped.

The locals requested higher ups to look into the matter so that they can heave a sigh of relief.

Meanwhile, Municipal officials said that water bodies in the area will be cleaned on priority basis.

They requested people not to throw waste material in the canal as it will have hazardous results.
