Shopian: The famous Sangloo stream passing through south Kashmir’s Shopian town has been turned into a dumping site, locals alleged Tuesday.

The residents of the area said that the stream going through different areas of town has now completely turned into dumping site at several spots especially in Bonbazar area of the town.

They said that stream has been encroached at most of the places and has been turned into a filthy drain.

They said that at present the canal is full of dirt, polythene at several spots as shopkeepers and residents have been throwing household muck, polythenes and other garbage into the water body.

Basharat Ahmad, a local resident said that washroom waste of the most of the households living on the banks of stream is also being flushed into the stream making it stinky.

He said that during summer season foul smell coming out of the garbage dumped in the canal is forcing passersby to hold their noses.

The locals said that issue has been brought in notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail.

They requested higher ups in the administration and the municipal body to look into the matter and take step to rejuvenate the canal.

The locals also requested authorities to take action against the persons throwing waste into the stream thereby disrupting the seamless flow of water.

Meanwhile, when contacted an official of the MC Shopian said that the civic body has already pressed many garbage collecting vehicles into service for collection of door to door garbage and it is unfortunate that still some people are throwing waste in it.

He said that it is shame for all of us that we are throwing all our dirt in the canal.

He requested people to avoid throwing dirt in the stream and cooperate in keeping it clean.
