Pulwama: The mismanagement of the traffic and callous attitude of officials has left Tral town in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district in complete mess as the town reports huge traffic jams for hours together especially in morning and evening, locals alleged.

They said that the reason behind the mess is due to lack of parking space, mismanagement of traffic, absence of footpaths and non compliance of traffic rules by the people.

People themselves are also responsible as they often pull their vehicles on roadsides which cause long and frequent traffic jams, said Rizwan Ahmad, a local resident.

“Haphazard parking of vehicles hampers traffic movement. Some shopkeepers even park their vehicles on roads which are already very narrow. This also leads to traffic jams and causes inconvenience to us,” he said.

Locals said that public is mostly responsible for this mess as they park vehicles on roads and it is high time that the concerned authorities wake up from slumber and restore traffic system by taking action against the violators.

Abbas Ahmad, another local said that traffic jams have become order of the day in the town and this is mainly due to parking of vehicles alongside the road and absence of footpaths.

He said that vendors and shopkeepers are occupying the main roads due to which pedestrians are forced to walk on the already narrow roads and it takes half an hour to cover just few hundred meters.

“It takes an hour to cover just few meters on Tral -Satoora road on daily basis in morning and evening as due to wrong parking and narrow road, two vehicles can’t pass at a time,” said a local teacher.

He said that students and patients are suffering due to the frequent traffic jam in the town.

A group of employees said the persistent traffic jams have put their jobs at risk as they fail to reach their respective offices on time.

“Government has failed in widening of some of the roads in the main town which would have helped in clearing this mess,” they said.

Locals said that this issue was brought into the notice of concerned higher ups several times but as of now nothing has happened.

They once again requested higher ups to look into the matter and take immediate steps in this regard so that people won’t suffer anymore.
