YK Pora Kulgam residents allege shortage of potable water

Kulgam: The residents of Yar Kushipora hamlet in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district alleged that their area is facing shortage of potable water since many years.

The residents said that at least 8-10 villages of the area are facing an acute water crisis since years but so far nothing has been done.

They said that villages of YK Pora hamlet including Check Muswani, Peer Taqi, Nagrus, Baghpora and other areas have been suffering in absence of potable water.

Masroor Ahmad, a local resident said that pipeline in the area were laid long back but the water supply is still a distant dream.

He said that some households were getting water for sometime but the residential houses that have come up in these localities during the past one decade are yet to be covered.

Manzoor Ahmad, another local resident said that since last many years now they have been waiting to get water supply but as of now that day hasn’t come.

He added that in absence of potable water, the people are forced to consume contaminated water due to which people mainly elderly and the children often fall ill.

The locals said that authorities are risking the lives of the people by forcing them to drink contaminated water.

The locals said that some of the households in the village have dug borewells on their own where locals have been getting water for drinking purposes but they too have been facing shortage of water during summer and autumn season.

The locals said that despite raising the ise in many meeting with the government functionaries the ise has not been resolved yet.

They requested the officials to look into the matter at an earliest so that they can heave a sigh of relief.

Meanwhile, an official of the Jal Shakti Department said that the area is now being covered under Jal Jeewan Mission and construction work of the scheme is going on.

He assured that area will get potable water supply soon.
