Arthritis is an umbrella term for various inflammatory joint conditions that result in pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced mobility. It can make simple tasks like walking or even holding a cup challenging. World Arthritis Day is celebrated every year on 12th October to raise awareness about the prevalence and challenges of arthritis, fostering support for people with this condition.

Arthritis can affect people of various ages, not just the elderly. In case you or your loved ones are experiencing severe joint pain, it is advisable to get tested for arthritis.

Around 62.35 million people suffer from osteoarthritis in India.

This is the most common type of arthritis that results from the breakdown of joint, cartilage and underlying bone, commonly affecting the knees, hips, and hands.

Arthritis is more than just joint pain

The symptoms can vary depending on the type of arthritis and its severity. Some of them include:

■ Swelling

■ Stiffness

■Weight loss

■Redness and warmth around the joint

■ Joint deformities

■ Skin rashes or nodules

■ Eye inflammation

Reduced range of motion

■ Fatigue and weakness

Difficulty breathing (in severe cases)

■ Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet

■ Persistent fever

Tips to ease joint pain

Manage Your Weight

Excess weight adds stress on the joints. Avoid sedentary lifestyle and inflammation triggering foods. Furthermore, intermittent fasting for weight control can benefit too.

Protect Your Joints

Learn coping skills for routine activities like avoiding sitting cross-legged or squatting. Furthermore, practice joint-friendly techniques for daily tasks and activities, such as using assistive devices and proper ergonomics.

Supportive braces can help stabilize and relieve pressure on arthritic joints, reducing pain and promoting better function by providing external support and alignment.

Be Physically Active

This might look challenging with all the stiffness, pain, and decreased range of motion. However, simple activities like walking, and stretching can help manage arthritis symptoms by improving joint flexibility, reducing pain, and enhancing overall physical function.

Avoid high-impact and repetitive motions such as running, and jumping, that can increase joint pain..

Make Your Bathroom Arthritis-friendly

Ensure your bathroom is arthritis-friendly with wall-mounted or portable grab bars near the toilet, providing stability and relieving stress on painful joints. This simple modification enhances bathroom accessibility.

Avoid Overusing Pain Relievers

Arthritis pain is generally episodic and can exacerbate during cold weather. Discuss arthritis pain relief medications with your doctor, including over-the-counter options like paracetamol and ibuprofen, and seek medical advice for persistent pain.
