Shopian:-A large number of people put their lives at risk by using a damaged bridge at Dangam area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district every day, locals alleged Friday.

They said that the bridge connecting Shopian with Kulgam districts is lying in dilapidated condition and as a result the public is facing huge inconvenience.

People from different areas of Shopian and Kulgam who have been using this bridge on daily basis said that bridge at Dangam Shopian has got damaged and needs immediate repairing.

Sameer Ahmad, a local resident said that the bridge was constructed by the Army some 25 years back but since then the government has failed to construct a new bridge there or even repair the existing one.

He said that plates of the bridge have got damaged at several spots and accidents are happening frequently at the spot.

Reyaz Ahmad, another local resident said that the bridge is unsafe and can prove fatal if immediate steps are not taken.

He said that it is very risky to use the bridge especially for children and elderly people as plates of the bridge are slipping away and there are big gaps between plates as well.

The locals said that since last nine years the government is claiming that new bridge will be constructed at the spot but nothing is being done on ground.

They said that the bridge is very important as it is connecting hundreds of villages with each other.

They added that repair of the bridge becomes more important in apple harvesting season when more vehicles have to cross it to reach their destinations.

They said that despite taking the issue with the higher ups and other public representatives several times, nothing was done in this regard.

The locals have once again requested the concerned authorities to look into the matter at an earliest.
