Sumo cab drivers stage protest, demand land for parking stand in Keller
Shopian: Scores of sumo drivers on Tuesday protested in Keller area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district and demanded land for sumo stand in the area.
The drivers while protesting alleged that there is no proper space for them where they can park their vehicles till they get their turn to run through the route.
“Currently, we have been parking our vehicles at one space that is in dilapidated condition and whole dirt of the town is being thrown there,” they said.
Shakeel Ahmad, a driver said that some drivers have been parking vehicle along the roadside but it often leads to traffic jam in the area.
“State land is available in the town which government can provide us to be used as a sumo stand but as of now nothing is being done,” he complained.
Drivers said that passengers are also suffering as there is no proper space for the stand and they have been facing difficulties in boarding the vehicles.
“If permanent stand will be established, then other facilities like toilet can be made available so that passengers as well as drivers won’t face any inconvenience,” they protesting drivers said.
Despite bringing this issue in notice of higher ups several times, no positive steps are being taken in this regard, they said.
“We have even approached the court in this regard but as of now we haven’t got any relief from there as well,” they said.
The protesting drivers requested the DC Shopian to personally intervene in this regard so that drivers along with the passengers won’t suffer anymore.
