Police arrests three drug peddlers

Srinagar: Police arrested three drug peddlers in Budgam and Awantipora and recovered huge quantity of contraband substances from their possession. Police also freezed properties of drug smugglers worth crores during the current year in Baramulla, a police spokesman said on Monday.

He said that a police party during patrolling near Sehpora Bridge intercepted a suspicious person carrying two nylon bags who attempted to evade the police party but was apprehended tactfully. He has been identified as Shabir Ahmad Dar son of Abdul Rashid Dar resident of Naidpora Bon Makhama. During search, officers were able to recover 22 Kgs of Poppy Straw from his possession. He has been arrested and shifted to police station where he remains in custody.

Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Magam and investigation has been initiated.

Meanwhile, in Awantipora, a police party at a checkpoint established at Befina near Pump Shed arrested a drug peddler identified as Javaid Ahmad Dar son of Ghulam Mohammad Dar resident of Befina. During search, 2.5 Kgs of Fukki was recovered from his possession. Accordingly, a case under relevant sections of law was registered and investigation has been initiated.

During the course of investigation, involvement of one more drug peddler identified as Noor Mohammad Nangroo son of Mohammad Anwar Nangroo resident of Badi Bagh Pulwama has emerged. Subsequently, he has been arrested and 4.7 Kgs of Fukki was recovered on his instance.

Additionally, Police carries special destruction drive of wild bung in village Kaigam in the jurisdiction of Police Station Awantipora. A joint team comprising of Police Station Awantipora alongwith officials of excise department destroyed bung in approximately 50 Kanals of land.

Moreover, Police in Baramulla during the current year have freezed the properties worth Rs 2.1 Crores of drug smugglers which includes 03 residential houses, 03 private vehicles and cash worth Rs 1.2 crore of drug smugglers in Pattan, Kreeri, Kamalkote Uri, Nambla Uri Baramulla under sections 68-E read with 68-F (1) of NDPS Act 1985.

Notably, the freezing of properties is a very stringent provision of NDPS Act and it empowers the police to take action against those drug peddlers who have acquired movable/immovable properties by doing drug business. This financial action by Police in Baramulla has caused great damage to the financial aspect of drug business and will help in discouraging others from getting into drug peddling.
