Adolescence: A roller coaster ride
By: Tabiya Mukhtar
Every human being grows from the day of his birth till his death. Every human being goes through a phase in his life which is called adolescence. It is an age where a person is not a child neither an adult. It starts between the age of 11 to 12 and ends in 18 or 19. It is a difficult age in which a child goes through both physical and mental growth. This phase of life is commonly termed as ‘teenage’.
During teenage, life becomes totally like a rollercoaster, full of ups and downs, twists and turns. During the teenage, our reproductive organs start growing and our mind starts becoming mature. In this age, an adolescent faces many problems. Some are discussed in the following lines.
It is quite difficult for a teenager to control their emotions. During teenage, mood changes within minutes because of the hormones in our body. A teenager starts getting worried about his or her reputation. They start worrying about their looks.
The psychology of teenagers is very difficult to understand. These are because of the orthodox thinking of family and society. When a teenager is going through this phase of life, our society, even his own family, starts making them feel insecure about their looks. We can simply say, they start body shaming them. They start taunting them like you are this and that etc, causing low esteem and low confidence levels among them.
A teenager is treated like a child and is supposed to act like an adult. They are pressurized to get good grades. They are supposed to do what their parents have already decided for them. They also make a girl insecure about their physical changes like monthly periods. Social media in this age is quite harmful. It results in anxiety, depression, drug addiction, and suicidal thoughts, et cetera.
In order to make this phase of adolescents comfortable, our society and families should become mature enough and try to understand teenagers. They need to support them. They also need to stop judging everyone on any basis because this can harm and destroy their lives. This phase of life lays the foundation for the future course of life. This must be taken seriously and not lightly at all.
