Election campaign, convention held at Fruit Mandi Sopore

Sopore: Fruit traders on Monday at Asia’s second largest fruit Mandi here in Sopore town held an election campaign cum convention meeting.

The convention meeting was headed by former president Mushtaq Ahmad Tantray, who is also standing as election candidate for year 2023 to be held in next month, besides scores of fruit traders associated with the Mandi took part in this massive campaign.

During the convention various speakers emphasised on the welfare of traders and upgradation of the Mandi.

The problems and grievances faced by fruit traders were also highlighted.

“The mandi has got the name of Asia’s second largest fruit mandi, but the condition of this mandi is looking worse,” Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, a senior trader, said.

While speaking during the convention, Mushtaq Ahmad Tantray, who is a contender for the Presidents post said that some “selfish elements have belittled the glory of this historic mandi for their personal benefits. They have held the mandi and fruit traders hostage for their personal interests,” he said.

He claimed that he will work tirelessly for the benefit of fruit trader and mandi as he had already done when he was at the helm of affairs.

He said that the government should also focus on this mandi so that the problems faced by traders were resolved.

Other speakers spoke regarding the facilities at the mandi said that, the mandi does not even have basic facilities like sanitation, drinking water and magdamized roads.

“The drainage system is such that our goods get flooded during winters and are engulfed in dust during summers,” they said.
