Residents of Bijbehara town face ‘acute shortage’ of potable water

Anantnag: The residents of New Colony in Bijbehara town area of Anantnag district are facing acute shortage of water since last several days, the locals have alleged.

The residents of the area said that they were getting water supply on regular basis but since last few days the water supply has got disrupted causing huge sufferings to the people.

Salman Ahmad, a local resident said that the area with around 500 households has been facing shortage of water since last 15 days.

He said that locals have contacted several officers in this regard since the past one week but no attention has been given to resolve the crisis.

Locals said they have been visiting nearby areas to get water for drinking purposes.

“Our women folk have been suffering during this scorching heat to get water from other areas while authorities have been acting as mere spectators,” they said.

The residents have now sought attention of Deputy Commissioner Anantnag in this regard.

Meanwhile, an official while acknowledging that supply has got disrupted in some parts of the town due to dry weather and corrosion of old pipes, said that department is working to replace the old pipes and the water supply will be fully restored soon.

He requested people to use water judiciously and avoid using drinking water for irrigation purposes in kitchen gardens and orchards.
