Baramulla: Conserve India along with HDFC Parivartan and Indian Army, launched its project on 19 June 2023 in Baramulla District on plastic waste recycling and livelihood generation for youth at Indian Army’s Chinar 9 Jawan Club, a reputed Skill Development Centre of Baramulla.

The Plastic Recycling Unit’s official launch was marked with the presence of Maj Gen Rajesh Sethi, SM, VSM, GOC 19 Infantry Division.

The project was initiated by the Indian Army along with support from the Municipal Council of Baramulla to empower the youth and provide green livelihood opportunities. The project also aims to solve the plastic pollution problem that has plagued the valley of Kashmir. Swachhgrahis (Community Workers) have been trained in collection, sorting and cleaning of plastic waste.

This waste is then converted into fabric to create high fashion accessories and home decor products by the youth of Kashmir. The products fabricated under the project will be retailed by the youth group under their own brand – “Posh Bags”. Posh Bags products will be sold all through India and abroad. The project is being implemented on ground by Conserve India – a NGO headquartered in Delhi who have developed a patented technology to create a leather-like fabric from plastic waste and empower grass root communities to use waste as a resource.

The project also creates community level social impact and sensitisation of surrounding communities through ‘Specialised Workshops on Social and Environmental Issues’. This collaboration helps enable the vision of our PM Narendra Modi for mission LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment) and Swachh Bharat on green entrepreneurship for the youth of Kashmir.
