Poem: Summer
By: Rayees Ahmad Kumar
A couple of years ago or so
The summer days would compel us
To dip in streams and rivulets
Sleep in attics and balconies
Using modern electric gadgets
Fans, AC’s and refrigerators
To beat the scorching heat of sun
Wearing light cotton clothes
Half sleeves and loose pants
White coloured to absorb minimum heat
Mass migration of tribal’s to upper belts
We’re it’s well established principles
But now – the summer is altogether different
We still wear woolen clothes
Welcome firepots and blankets in homes
Heater and bukhari in offices
Carrying an umbrella in bags
Is our routine now
Alongside a sweater and heavy jacket
The crop season of ours too
Has got delayed so much
It still freshens our memories
Of chilliakallans biting chill
One wonders, is it a climate change
Or merely due to our evil deeds
