Shopian: The residents of Herpora in Shopian district are up in arms against the administration for their failure in providing them with houses under Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY), housing for all scheme.

The residents of the area said that they are living a pathetic life and deserve to be accommodated under PMAY scheme.

“We have been submitting files every year to get accommodated under the scheme but as of now, nothing has been done for us,” they said.

Aijaz Ahmad, a local resident said that around 2 lakh houses have been sanctioned for J&K residents recently but we were informed that there is zero target for Herpora area.

He said that around 25 families in the area are living a miserable life as they are living in dilapidated old sheds that can collapse anytime.

“We don’t have any source of income and people were earning their livelihood through their small orchards and potatoe farming but apples were damaged by hail storm and potatoes by continuous rainfall,” said Lateef Ahmad, another local.

He added that locals have been visiting offices of concerned authorities repeatedly but they are just getting false assurances and nothing else.

The locals said that they have been taking part in elections and other flagship government programmes but due to unknown reasons, they are being ignored every time.

The locals said that they have high hopes from Lt Guv Manoj Sinha and requested him to look into the matter and direct concerned authorities to sanction houses for these poor residents of Herpora..
