Batafojan Keller residents allege shortage of potable water

Shopian: The residents of Batafojan Chown in Keller hamlet of south Kashmir’s Shopian district alleged that they are facing shortage of potable water for past several years even as authorities are acting as mere spectators.

Accusing the authorities of ignoring their plights, the residents demanded immediate redressal of their genuine grievances.

The residents said that they have never seen potable water facilities in the area while the officials are paying no heed to their sufferings.

Tariq Ahmad, a local resident said that they have been facing drinking water crisis since years together and are forced to drink water of Romshi Nallah that is contaminated and far from village as well.

He said that in absence of potable water, they are forced to drink contaminated water due to which people, mainly elderly and children, often fall ill.

Irshad Sheikh, another local said that on the one hand the government is putting emphasis on cleanliness but on the other hand people are forced to consume contaminated water.

He said that authorities are risking the lives of the people by forcing them to drink water that is unsafe.

Locals said that despite repeated requests to the government no steps to provide potable water to the area are being taken.

They said that several schools are also located in the area but students of area suffer in absence of potable water availability in the schools.

The locals said that they have brought this issue into the notice of higher ups several times but to no avail.

They requested the officials to look into the matter at an earliest so that they can heave a sigh of relief.
