School working without Principal for past four years, allege locals

Kulgam: Government Higher Secondary School Munad Guffan in Yaripora hamlet of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district lacks basic amenities like separate washrooms for female students and staff even as school is functioning without a Principal for past four years, locals have alleged.

The residents of the area along with students of the school said that the school has just two washrooms that are being used by both male and female students along with the faculty members.

They said that lawn of the school is uneven and it transforms into a pool during rainfall besides that female students have been suffering in absence of separate washrooms for them.

“The school has roll of around 170 students but they are suffering due to shabby classrooms besides damaged furniture,” they said.

“A new building has been constructed but due to unknown reasons, it hasn’t been made functional yet,” said a local.

He said that the school is functioning without a principal since last four years, besides that in absence of proper infrastructure and space, students are mostly taught under the open sky.

“There is no proper fencing and after office hours anyone can enter into school and damage whatever he wants and is vulnerable to drug addicts,” said another local.

A teacher requesting anonymity said that the main building has ten rooms, one each for the library, sports, computer, admission hall and another for the Principal’s office.

“Only five rooms are functional for teaching purposes,” he said.

Locals said that despite taking up the issue with concerned authorities several times, no positive step has been taken in this regard.

Meanwhile, an official said that they have already taken up the issue of completion of new building with executing agency and hopefully it will be completed soon.

He said that higher ups have been informed several times about the post of Principal lying vacant and a Principal will be posted soon.
