Embankments of vital Vishaw river turning into dumping site

Anantnag: The embankments of Vishaw river have been turned into dumping sites in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

Locals from different areas of Kulgam from where Vishaw is passing said that vendors, shopkeepers and even some locals are dumping waste near the banks of the river thereby causing immense damage to the water body.

They said that dumping waste along banks often attract dogs and other animals in search of food, thereby posing threat to public, especially students.

Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Khudwani said that some time back the water of Vishow was used for drinking purposes but this water body has been turned into a cesspool.

“When there is no mechanism in place and no dumping sites available, people, shopkeepers throw waste including plastic and polythene into the river,” he said.

Locals said that they have brought the issue into the notice of higher ups several times but to no avail.

They requested higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest so that river can be saved from further damage.

Meanwhile, an official said RDD is working to establish solid waste management shed in every village so as to keep water bodies and environment clean.

He said that regularly garbage is being cleared from embankments of river Vishaw but some people are dumping the waste on the banks.
