Letter to the Editor

Dear Sir,

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SME’s) play an important role in India’s economy as about 30% of country’s GDP is from SME’s. These SME’s have been identified as a major source of air and water pollution in many sources as per apportionment studies.

One of the causes of pollution from these sectors is a lack of regulatory practices such as environmental monitoring, guidelines, and best practices, a comprehensive fuel policy, regulatory enforcement, and poor policy implementation on the ground.

As a result of the alarming increase in air and water pollution, it is time for regulators to act as an ombudsman, working on pollution mitigation measures and ensuring effective policy implementation.

For better compliance, SME’s should be trained by centre and state governments to make understand environmental laws and regulatory strategies and also to makeĀ  aware of ambient and stack-based monitoring.

These should be trained for pollution load assessment of industrial emission. SME’s should be trained for water audit for effective waste water management and also dissemination required for waste management to decrease pollution.
