‘Umeed’ helps Pampore widow to earn livelihood, manage family

Pulwama: A 50-year-old woman from Pampore area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district is setting herself on the pedestal of economic freedom by starting a mushroom unit with the help of UMEED.

Afroza Banoo, resident of Shaar Shali Pampore had lost her husband around a decade back, has been managing his family affairs after getting help from UMEED.

Afroza while talking to ‘Kashmir Vision’ said that she lost her husband, the lone bread earner of the family’ around 12 years back and it was very difficult to manage the family including her three children.

“With no source of income, I suffered lot of problems in managing my family but in 2018, I came to know about Self Help Groups of Umeed which I joined instantly,” She said.

“After working for some time, I started to get some loans and I used to spend on various small projects to manage my family affairs and earn my livelihood as well,” she said.

“Later I started a Mushroom unit at my home, through which I have been earning my livelihood very well and have been even managing studies of my three children as well,” she said.

“In coming months, I plan to increase the capacity of my unit so that I can earn more so as to manage everything very well,” she added.

“The whole credit of my success goes to Umeed, with the help of which I was able to start a unit to earn my livelihood and feed my family,” she added.

“I am about to plant fresh crop as after sowing mushroom seeds, the crop gets ready in a few weeks. Once the crop is ready, the mushrooms are placed in small boxes with proper packaging and then supplied to the market,” she said.

“The packed organic mushroom boxes are sold in vegetable markets between Rs 25 and 50,” she said.

Notably, mushrooms are becoming the most sought after delicacy in Kashmir. Over the years mushroom have become part of the famous Kashmiri Wazwaan cuisine and Mushroom Yakhni, a delicious curry cooked with yoghurt and spices has found a place in every household’s menu in Kashmir.
