112 vehicles of JKRTC plying on Kashmir roads: Officials

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Road Transport Corporation (JKRTC) Tuesday said that around 112 vehicles providing affordable, reliable transport services and promoting tourism are plying across Kashmir.

Pervaiz Abdullah, Kashmir head of JKRTC said that last year they had 17 vehicles plying on Srinagar roads and this year 16 more vehicles, which include eE-buses have been put to use for city service

He said that out of the vehicles that are operating in Srinagar city, one has developed some fault and that too is being looked after so that the bs becomes operational.

“Previous year the department had 103 vehicles plying throughout the Kashmir valley. This year the count has been further increased and we have 112 transport buses in operation throughout the Kashmir districts,” he said.

The department has enhanced services very well and now the buses run from far flung areas as well.

“This has made transportation for local people comfortable and hassle free,” Pervaiz said, adding, people are very happy with the operation of bus service in the valley.

“The buses we run on different routes have the lowest fare, if we talk of Kulgam to Srinagar the fare is just 100 rupees. The poor people are happy as it is proving beneficial for them,” he added.

Rakesh Kumar Srangal, who is the Managing Director of J&K Road Transport Corporation said that good transport facilities are present in cities and towns but in rural, far-flung areas such facilities aren’t available and people rely on outdated transport services.

He said our mandate is not only to earn revenue, but to provide some service to the people as well.

“We have kept some vehicles with the tourism department so as to provide a boost to the tourism sector,” he said.

“The fleet of vehicles we have as of now is enough, we are looking forward to optimize them as much as we can”,  Srangal added.

Regarding the rumours of defunct vehicles within Srinagar, he said there is no such case. “We hire new drivers and make sure we ply the buses well,” he added.
