Anantnag: The residents of Sursuna village in Anantnag district are up in arms against Jal Shakti Department for failing to provide drinking water to the residents of the area.

The residents said that they were getting water supply from Shoul scheme till 2014 , however, the scheme was declared unsafe due to high concentration of iron present in the water.

They said that since then 2014, a water tanker is being sent on every alternative day but that isn’t enough to cater to a village housing around 300 households.

In absence of any proper potable water facility, they are forced to drink contaminated water due to which water borne diseases can break out any time in the area, the locals said.

They added that their children and elderly people often fall sick and the reason behind it was the contaminated water what they are consming.

“9 years have passed since water supply scheme in the area was declared unsafe but no positive steps has been taken on ground to provide some relief to the locals,” said Ashiq Hussian, a local resident.

He said that a new scheme was sanctioned in year 2018 and even work was started in 2020 but the scheme has been left midway.

He said that government is claiming that every household is being connected with Jal Jeevan mission but the area has been waiting since a decade and their dreams are yet to come true.

“We have facing problem since years and brought this issue into the notice of concerned authorities umpteen times but to avail, said Mohammad Younis, another resident.

Meanwhile, an official of the concerned department said that under the JKIDFC (Jammu & Kashmir Infrastructure Development Finance Corporation) scheme, a filtration plant was sanctioned to be constructed in the village, and the work was started in 2020.

He said that government issued a circular that all languishing programmes be shifted to the JJM project after which a fresh proposal has been submitted before the concerned authorities.
