Pulwama: The famous ‘Atta Kul’ passing through south Kashmir’s Tral town has been turned into a dumping site, locals complained on Tuesday.

The canal which starts from Dilnag Park and passes through different areas of town has completely dried up and has been turned into a garbage dumping site.

Locals said that the Canal has been encroached at most of the places and has been turned into a drain.

“At present the canal is full of silt, dirt and polythene due to which people who visit the spot or those residing adjacent to it face huge inconveniences,” the locals said.

Basharat Ahmad a local resident said that waste of several households living on the banks of the canal also goes into the dried up canal making it more stinky.

“Foul smell coming out of the garbage dumped in the canal forces passersby to hold their noses. It really becomes difficult to stand near the spot for a few seconds,” the locals said.

Locals said that issue was brought into the notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail.

The locals urged the higher ups to look into the matter and take steps to restore the canal to its original position.

Meanwhile an official of the Municipal Committee Tral said that Rs 5 lakh has already been sanctioned for de-slitting of the canal and work is expected to commence soon.

“It is a shame for all of us that we throw all our dirt in the canal. people should use their civic sense and avoid polluting this canal,” he said.

He urged the people to do away with dumping of garbage in the canal and cooperate with the MC to keep it clean.
