Pulwama: A famous Spring in Khrew town of Pampore belt in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district has become the victim of official apathy as and is at the verge of extinction.

The locals said that Nagbal spring is known for fresh water and the whole area was using it for drinking purposes.

“But the spring has been polluted for the last two decades due to cement factories present in the area,” the locals said.

The locals said 50 percent of their land is dependent on the spring for irrigation facilities.

“But, if efforts are not taken at an earliest, we will lose this precious water body,” they said.

They said that heaps of garbage and polythene are seen lying in and around this spring and there is no one to care about these water bodies.

“The authorities should wake up from their slumber and take immediate steps to safeguard this spring,” said another local.

“We informed the officials about this grave issue time and again but they convince us with their verbal assurances and nothing is being done on ground,” the locals said.

They urged the higher ups to look into the matter and take immediate steps for the preservation of this spring.

An official said that MC Khrew has conducted several cleanliness drives on a number of occasions to remove slit, mud and other accumulated material from the spring.

“An amount of Rs 50 lakh was sanctioned for restoration of the spring. But the decision for demarcation lies with the Archeology department  and we have taken up the matter with them,” he said.
