Shopian: A filtration plant constructed by the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department in ChanchMarg Shadab Karewa area of Shopian has been left abandoned for years together.

The move has left the residents at the receiving end as they have been forced to consume contaminated water.

The residents of the area said the work on the filtration plant was started to provide potable water to the local population.

“But the work was abruptly stopped after it was near completion and the filtration plant was later left abandoned,” the locals said.

They said that since years no work has been done to which the plant has become a dumping site.

“Garbage along with plastic bottles and other dirt can be seen in it,” the locals said.

The residents said if the government constructed the plant to provide potable water to locals why it was left abandoned for unknown reasons.

“It is all our money that we pay as taxes which was used in construction of the filtration plant, then why it has been left unattended and public money is being wasted,” said Irshad Ahmad, a local resident of the area.

He said that getting potable water has become a distant dream for them.

“In absence of a filtration plant, we are getting contaminated water due to which water borne diseases can break out anytime,” the locals said.

They said the issue was brought to the notice of concerned authorities so many times but to no avail.

The residents demanded that the matter must be investigated why the filtration plant has been left unattended resulting in wastage of government resources.

The residents demanded intervention of DC Shopian in this regard.
