5 years on, PMGSY yet to provide compensation to land donors of Shopian
Shopian: Despite the passage of over five years, the authorities at PMGSY have failed to provide the compensation to Shopian residents who provided their land for the construction of the road.
The residents of Kathohalan and Nagbal areas of south Kashmir’s Shopian district said the road which passes through their area was upgraded in 2017 and locals provided land for its upgradation.
“We agreed to provide our land after the department assured us that we will get compensation for the land,” a local resident said.
The residents said around five years have passed but their assurances remained confined to only papers.
“The poor people of the area provided orchard land while some had to cut down their trees to pave way for the up gradation of the road,” said Mohammad Rafiq, a local resident.
He said that people were assured that they will receive the compensation at the rate of Rs 8 lakh per kanal.
“But the verbal assurances are yet to come true,” he said.
The locals said they have been visiting government offices and knocking every door to get justice. “But nothing has been done as of now. The verbal assurances of the department proved a hoax,” the locals said.
The locals requested the higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest and provide compensation as promised to them five years ago.
