ANANTNAG: The residents of Anantnag town on Wednesday complained that the Municipal Council (MC) has failed to repair the defunct streetlights in their area, leaving them high and dry.

The residents alleged that over 50 percent of the streetlights were defunct in the town while the authorities were least bothered to get the light repaired.

“The street lights from Mehandi Kadal Anantnag to Janglatmandi are defunct from the last six months and authorities have failed to take cognizance of the issue,” said a local resident of the area.

They said that streetlights worth lakhs of rupees were installed in the main market from Mehandi Kadal Anantnag to Janglatmandi a few years ago.

“But these lights are defunct for six months and have been left unattended by the MC Anantnag,” the locals said.

They said that lights were not defunct on interior roads only but on main roads as well but the authorities are in deep slumber.

They said the elderly people while going for prayers or visiting hospitals are the main sufferers during wet weather.

“We have brought this issue to the notice of higher ups several times but to no avail,” they said and urged the authorities to take cognizance of the issue and make all lights functional.

Meanwhile an official said that street lights infrastructure in the town was being upgraded in near future.

“Work will start on it in coming times,” the official said.
