Pulwama: An abandoned school building in the Gudoora area of Pulwama district has become a safe haven for drug addicts, locals have alleged.

The residents have expressed their concern over the issue and have demanded shifting of the health centre in the building.

Locals said that the Government Middle School in Gudoora was merged with Government High School due to meager enrolment of the students which left the building of middle school vacant.

“The building continued to be used for ill activities by some people as the school education department has failed to provide any watch and ward to the building,” the residents said.

One can find empty bottles of codeine (the most abused prescription drug) and empty strips of drugs used by the addicts.

“They come in the evening hours mostly and indulge in drug abuse in this abandoned building,” the residents said.

The school building is in shambles with broken windows and doors which has turned it into a ghost house.

Locals said the health center in the locality was currently functioning from a congested space noting that the government should shift the health care center to the abandoned building to make it operational.

“We have brought this issue in notice of concerned authorities several times but to no avail,” they said.

The locals urged the higher ups to look into the matter at an earliest and curb the menace of substance in the locality.
