After seven years, teacher convicted in Shopian rape case

'Teacher to be imprisoned for 20 years, fined with 10 lacs'

Shopian: A court in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Monday convicted a teacher for raping of a 8th-class student in 2015.

The accused has been identified as Mohammad Maqbool Ganie son of Mohammad Anwar Ganie from D. K Pora Shopian. The accused was the victim’s teacher and had committed the crime in 2015.

“He was then posted at Government High School DK Pora Shopian and was convicted in Case FIR No. 179/2015  U/S 376/F, 342,506 RPC of PS Shopian,” an official said.

He said that in year 2015, the teacher in question had asked the student to come for tuition to his home, where he tore her clothes and raped her.

Following the rape incident, the student along with her parents registered a complain before police and after that it was thoroughly investigated.

“The quantum of punishment as per the court will be 20 years imprisonment for the teacher and 10 lac fine,” the official said.

He said Rs 10 lac fine imposed on the teacher will be given to the victim.

“It is a heinous crime and such incidents shouldn’t come to fore in our society,” he said.
