Anantnag: A vital World Bank project executed by the Economic Reconstruction Agency (ERA) in the Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district has been awaiting completion for years.

The project was abandoned soon after work was started on it some two years ago.

The project includes construction of a bridge over Jhelum and approach road in the area. Both the projects are awaiting completion as no work has been done for the last two years.

An official said the construction of an approach road named ‘Upgradation of Bijbehara to Kanihama road via Katriteng and Waghama’ is aimed at widening and upgradation of 8.396 kilometres, which will include a bridge in the New Colony Bijbehara area, with an estimated cost of Rs 14.70 crore.

“The work on the project was started earlier but was left in mid way. No work has been done for the last two years now,” a local resident said.

Locals said that work on the project was started in 2020 but due to unknown reasons it has been stopped.

“If the project gets completed, it will decongest Bijbehara town to a large extent,” the locals said.

They said the issue was brought in notice of higher ups a number of times but to no avail.

The residents urged the higher ups to look into the matter and complete the project at an earliest.

An official of ERA said that 90 percent of the project is almost complete while work on the pending portion will be started soon.

“There were some hiccups which have been sorted out now,” the official said.
