Srinagar, Sep 29: A delegation of Apple Traders met Ashok Koul, Gen sect (org) Bhartiya Janta Party in south Kashmir’s Shopian district. The delegation comprised of traders and apple growers, a statement issued by the traders said.

“The members of the delegation put forth their demands which were listened to by Ashok Koul quite keenly,” the statement said.

It said that the BJP leader also visited the office of the Association at Shopian and assured them that he will do everything possible to mitigate the suffering of apple traders and growers.

Notably, apple growers and traders have been alleging delay in transportation of fruit to outside Mandies due to bad condition of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

The traders have alleged that the fruit laden trucks take days together to cross the national highway and as a result the fruit gets destroyed even before reaching the mandies.

The statement also said that a memorandum from the Sopore Association was also presented to the visiting BJP leader.

“The memorandum was sent by Fayaz Kakaji,” the statement said.

“The association highlighted all their problems from transportation to import duty imposed in Bangladesh on the ‘American’ variety apples grown in Kashmir,” the statement said.

It said that the trader association also raised objections to the import of Iranian apples which is duty-free as a result, the sale of Indian apples suffers huge losses.

“The delegation of the traders headed by Mohammad Ameen, President Shopian Association along with his other members highlighted all the demands and appreciated the BJP leader Ashok Koul who despite his busy schedule visited Shopian and met all the traders and growers personally,” the statement added.

Notably, Javed Qadri and Mohammad Yunis were also part of the BJP team that arrived in Shopian to meet the fruit traders and growers and listen to their problems, the statement concluded.
