Dougam residents demand completion of filtration plant
Pulwama: A water supply scheme in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district is functioning without filtration plant for the past many years since forcing locals to consume contaminated water.
The residents of Dougam village said the water supply scheme in the area was made functional few years ago but is functioning without filtration plant since then
“In absence of filtration plant, water from Nallah is directly being supplied to them which is highly contaminated,” said Gulzar Ahmad a local resident.
He said filtration plant was sanctioned for the scheme but has been left incomplete for unknown reasons.
“We are forced to drink contaminated water of the nallah which is highly contaminated,” he said.
The locals said the 90 percent of the work on filtration plant was already completed but the remaining portion was left out, leaving residents at the receiving end.
“No work is being taken up since last several months due to which people of the area of suffering,” said Mushtaq Ahmad, a resident.
Locals said that they have taken up this issue in notice of higher ups several times but to no avail.
They urged the authorities to complete filtration plant at an earliest so that they can get potable water.
Meanwhile Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Nusrat Akhter said that there were some issues with contractor which led in delay in completion of the work.
“But the issues have been sorted out and within 10-15 filtration plant will be completed,” he said.
