Umair Shafiq Khanday
Dehydration due to the loss of water and body salts caused by diarrhea might not seem like a serious concern but it can lead to serious health hazards and even loss of life. In such cases, across the world ORS is highly recommended to recharge the body and refill the lost electrolytes caused by dehydration.
The complications in diarrhea mostly stem from dehydration which can be prevented by using ORS.
What is ORS?
Oral Rehydration Salts, also known as Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), is an electrolyte solution that helps replenish essential body fluids and salts. This simple concoction that is made using sugar, salt and water is the most effective and pocket friendly way to manage dehydration.
How does ORS work?
ORS does not stop diarrhea but is an effective treatment for 90-95% of people affected with diarrhea as it prevents their bodies from drying up due to loss of fluids. The glucose (from sugar) enables the intestine to absorb the fluid and the salts more efficiently thus rebalancing the electrolyte reserve.
ORS may reduce diarrhea mortality by up to 93%.
Here is a simple guide to prepare ORS using household
► Before preparing the solution, wash your hands with soap
► Take 1 liter or 5 cups (250 ml each) of clean drinking water
► Mix half a teaspoon of salt and 6 teaspoons of sugar
▷ Mix thoroughly until sugar dissolves
► Cover the solution and do not use it after 24 hours
In case of any doubts regarding the quality of water, boil the water and let it cool before making the solution.
Please note: Avoid adding too much sugar as it can worsen diarrhea.
Quick tips for using ORS
►Adults need ORS as much as children, although children must always be treated immediately as they get dehydrated faster.
➤Never boil the ORS solution after mixing.
► Some ORS brands must be used within 1 hour of mixing.
Read the label carefully.
► Mothers can continue to breastfeed. Breast milk is easily digestible and helps overcome the infection causing diarrhea.
► In case of vomiting, wait for 10 mins in between ORS doses.
► Do visit a doctor if diarrhea and/or vomiting persists even after 2-3 days.
Remember ORS is safe and can be used without having a detailed diagnosis before giving the solution. Let’s spread the word about the importance of ORS in saving lives.
