Srinagar: Noted Kashmiri poet and former Director Sericulture J&K Muzaffar Azim has passed away in the US, family sources said here on Saturday. He was 88.
Hailing originally from Gotlipora area of Tangmarg in north Kashmir, Aazim took voluntary retirement from service at the age of 50 when he was Director Sericulture to set up a soap unit as a business venture.
However, he soon left for the US where he lived with his two sons for the last three decades. His sons Dr Parvez Akhtar and Suhail Mir live in Virginia.
Several literary organisations in Kashmir condoled the demise of Aazim, remembering him as a great lover of Kashmiri language.
Bazm-e-Adab Gulmarg and many other literary bodies recalled Aazim’s rich contributions to the Kashmiri language and literature. Many remembered him as an impressive translator who translated Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace lucidly in the Kashmiri language.
To Aazim’s credit are also various poetic collections, even as he was very closely associated with Adbee Markaz Kamraz, a known Kashmiri literary organisation, during its infancy and was a prominent speaker at its conferences. His novel Awami Raj (Asamee) has bagged an award.
Aazim came out with two collections of poems ‘Zolana’ and ‘Mani-Kaman’ for which he received an award from the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art Culture and Languages in the seventies.
