Drivers stranded on highway face tough time

Srinagar: The Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for a third consecutive day on Thursday while hundreds of vehicles continued to be stranded.
An official said the road has been closed due to multiple landslides in Ramban and Udhampur districts.
“Restoration work on NH44 is going on at Dewal Bridge, T2 tunnel, Maroge 1 (Sita Ram Passi) Maroge 2, Battery Chashma and hopefully these locations may get cleared by Thursday evening,” the official said.
He said there was no movement on the national highway and Doda-Kishtwar road as well.
Meanwhile, an official said the slides on Mughal road have been cleared and is through for traffic.
As the Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for the third day following multiple landslides, truckers and cab drivers stuck at different points along the way have been left to fend for themselves.
Shamsad Singh, a truck driver stranded in Qazigund, said that they have been stranded for the past four days and have exhausted all their money.
“Shops are far from here and all our vegetables have been exhausted besides that we have to go far kilometres to bring water, ” he said.
Another truck driver echoed the same voice and said that they have been suffering since the last four days but no one from administration has visited here or offered any help.
They requested the government to clear the road at an earliest so that they can return to their respective destinations as their families are also very much worried about safety.
