Water shortage triggers protest in north Kashmir village

Sopore: The residents of Watlab Sangri top area of Sopore in Baramulla districton Tuesday staged a protest against the Jal Shakti department for failing to provide adequate water supply to them.
The residents including women assembled and blocked the Sopore-Bandipora road at Watlab Sangri Top and raied slogans against Jal Shakti department. The protestors were demanding regular water supply to their area.
The protesters said they are facing immense hardships due to acute shortage of water supply from the last one month. They alleged that officials in the department have failed to provide water supply to them in these summer days.
“We are being forced to fetch water from far away streams and lakes which can lead to breaking out of various water borne diseases among the residents particularly children and the elderly,” Farooq Ahmad Reshi, a protestor said.
Meanwhile, when contacted officials in the Jal Shakti department Sopore said that the pressure of water remains low and cannot reach the upper area which causes water shortage to these areas.
He said that as a temporary measure water is being provided to the area through tankers.
Te official said that some long term measures are being taken and the water crisis will be resolved soon.
