Three more killed in separate road mishap

Jammu: Three people, who were among those holding a protest demanding repair of drinking water supply pipes, were killed after a truck accidentally knocked them down in Jammu and Kashmir’s Udhampur district on Friday, officials said. Meanwhile, three more people dies in another road mishap at Garani area of Udhampur.
An official said that a truck driver failed to negotiate a blind curve and ended up ramming into few of the people, who were staging a protest demanding that the pipes supplying drinking water to their hamlet in Chenani area be repaired, the officials mentioned.
According to them, the three injured people were receiving specialised treatment, but one of them was in a critical condition, Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, Indu Chib told PTI.
The district administration has ordered an inquiry into the incident, the officer said.
Reports said that the villagers held the protest against officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and other agencies engaged in highway construction works.
The protest was held by people who alleged use of un-parliamentary language by some officials of NHAI.
This protest lasted for a few hours as the protestors were later pacified by the police officers along with civil administration and representatives from the concerned agency.
Police said that soon after this protest ended and people were on their way to destinations a truck bearing registration number JK01X-4682 was moving on the road when its driver lost control over the vehicle and hit two other light motor vehicles on the road and then crushed some pedestrians and people standing along the roadside.
Three people were killed on the spot while six others sustained injuries who were shifted to hospital where condition of three of the injured is stated to be critical.
The deceased have been identified as Abdul Rashid (60), son of Hassan Din, Savitri Devi (38), wife of Sudesh Kumar and Sarishta Devi (33), wife of Subash Chander—all residents of Baishty.
The injured include Mubashar Ahmed (03), Altaf Hussain (15), Gian Chand (57), Barket Begum (60), Shahin Akhter (29) and Muhammad Ramzan (28).
Meanwhile, soon after this tragic accident, another protest hit the area where a large number of people assembled on the road.
The protesters were later pacified by the officers of police and civil administration.
Police said that a case under FIR number 43/2022 U/S 279/337/304-A has been registered in local police station and further investigation is going on.
Earlier, in another road mishap three persons including a woman were killed in a road accident that took place at Garani area of Udhampur district.
A police official said that the accident took place when a motorcycle bearing registration number JK02B 4739 moving on highway hit a divider causing injuries to all three riders.
“They all were shifted from the site of accident to Udhampur district hospital where they were declared as brought dead.” police said.
The deceased has been identified as Shanti Devi (40) Saleem (45)and Sameer@ Rinku (20) all residents of Arnas in district Reasi. (with input from PTI, KNO)
